Social Work
The Tibetan Welfare Office provides emergency assistance to patients who find it difficult to travel long distances to hospitals because of physical disabilities or poverty. Besides assistance for newly arrived refugees is provided. In rare cases, depending upon the availability of funds, the Tibetan Welfare Office tries to give financial assistance to travellers who have lost their money and luggage. The Tibetan Welfare Office also assists persons or families who are unable to ensure customary cremation services to deceased persons. This involves consulting an astrologer for the proper date and time, transporting the corpse to the cemetery, arranging religious rites and cremation.

In 2001, Tibetan Welfare Office has set up a Gas Furnace Cremation, aimed to be eco-friendly and compassionate towards thousands of insects whom dwells in fire-woods. The Gas Furnace service is also free for poor and needy peoples.

In the event of a major natural disaster taking place in India, or another part of world, the Tibetan Welfare Office is geared to accept and direct donations from the public for disaster relief.  We assist about 40 such cases annually.

The Tibetan Reception Center, under the supervision of the Kashag (Cabinet), is mainly responsible for the reception and integration of newly arrived refugees from Tibet. After they arrive in the Dharamsala Reception Center, many are located in Tibetan monasteries, handicrafts, schools and vocational centers based on their interests and life-skills. Among them, many permanently stay in Dharamsala. The Tibetan Welfare Office , therefore, assists genuine poor new arrivals in a whole range of areas from translation and guidance in finding employment, to providing limited financial support for medication, and house rent during their first few months stay in Dharamsala.

Adding to this, the Tibetan Welfare Office provides assistance to Tibetans in legal matters. It helps to provide supporting documents or to assist the persons to understand the law and their rights. Sometimes, when a Tibetan is arrested for an offense the Tibetan Welfare Office maintains neutrality to help the local administration to enforce law and order. It also looks after the needs of the families of arrested persons.

Those interested can involve in our diverse social work programme by making donations to the social work programmes which could help reach all those who are suffering.
