World Environment Day 2007
Clean upIn the busy calendar schedule of global issues, 5th June is marked as the World Environment Day, which observed and celebrated internationally. Since it was first observed in 1972, it has many governements, organizations, businesses and individuals to contribute to a healthier living environment and construct a more environmentally sustainable world.
McLeod Ganj also celebrated the World Environment Day organized by the Tibetan Welfare Office.

On the recent World Environment Day 2007 the people of McLeod Ganj came together to remove the garbage from the various unofficial dumpsites around Upper Dharamsala. This effort was coordinated by the respective Tibetan area leaders and the green workers ot the Tibetan Welfare Office. Around 300 people took part in this clean up.
The Tibetan non-governmental organizations such as the Tibetan Refugee Welfare Shopkeeper Association and the Tibetan Handicraft Center jointly took the initiative of removing the garbage from the hillsides of His Holiness Dalai Lama temple road in McLeod Ganj. The Jogiwara hillside was taken care of by the Gu-Chu-Sum Ex-Political Prisoners members and the Jogiwara residents. The garbage lying around the hillsides of Bhagsu road was removed by the respective residents. Around 20 foreign volunteers took part in the clean up.
At the end of the day 2 1/2 truckloads of garbage were removed from the hillsides and surroundings, which was disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.
